Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How many pupils in a class?

A: We keep our classes small to ensure each pupil receives one to one teaching and therefore 8 is the maximum in each class.

Q: Do we have to complete assignments to hand in each week?

A: No, we do not give homework in the way of assignments, only perhaps ask you to practise your flower arranging as much as possible.

Q: Are there exams each term?

A: No, we do not set exams, you are assessed for your Certificates through your flower arrangements and progress in class and each term you are given a mark out of 25 and this becomes your final pass for the year.

Q: Do we have different teachers each week?

A: No, you will always have the same teacher for the entire year, except in the case of illness.

Q: Are we able to do any of our own designs to see how we are going?

A: At the end of each term you will have the opportunity to create a design of your own choice incorporating what you have learnt during the term.

Q: Do we have to bring our own containers and vases or can we buy them at the Academy?

A: You will have your choice of containers and vases and are offered a 25% discount on all purchases.

Q: Do we learn how to treat and handle the flowers with confidence so that we can work in a shop?

A: Yes, you will learn each week how to treat them and you will clean the foliage off your own flowers for each class, you will also be offered time in our shop to be hands on with all the flowers, this in turn will give you all the confidence you need to work in a shop or have your own florist shop.

Q: Do we actually learn how to run a shop and take flower orders by phone and send and receive orders by computer, also do we learn Interflora procedures and designs?

A: Yes, you will be taught all of this, both during class and also when doing work experience. You will learn everything necessary for finding work or running your own business.

Q: How much of the 2 or 3 hour class is actually hands-on with flowers?

A: The entire class is hands-on as we give you written notes of which we expect you to read at your leisure; you may like to take down some notes in class but this is entirely up to you for your own personal way of learning. There will be whiteboard demonstration of design, flower information, etc., however, we do not ask you to copy everything down although there is time given should you wish to.

Q: Do we take our arrangements home after each class?

A: Yes, you may as they will always be finished during class time and you may wish to sell them or give them away as gifts.

Q: How many designs do we do each week?

A: Usually two for the first 2-3 terms of the Year and then when we are doing more advanced lessons during the last term,we only do one.

Q: Do we learn how to copy designs if we need to?

A: Yes, we will teach you how to do this and it will come naturally after you have learnt the basics of Floristry.

Q: Are there any special Awards given to outstanding pupils and do we receive a Certificate at the end of the Course?

A: Yes, we have Awards for each different Course and trophies for the Winners and Runner-up. Certificates are given providing you have passed your 4 term assessments and attended the 32 classes.

Q: Are we assisted at the end of the year to gain work experience or a job in the flower industry.

A: Yes, we give you work experience during the latter part of your course and help you to learn how to work faster and more confidently to be more appealing to a prospective employer.
